16th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Sciences – ISSRNS 2025

On May 25-30, the 16th International School and Symposium on Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Sciences was held at the Klimczok Hotel in Szczyrk. It brought together 96 participants. Twenty-three lecturers were invited, 23 oral presentations were given, and 40 posters were presented. Thanks to the support of a grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (decision no. 2021/WK/11), which provides Polish scientists with access to ESRF, 14 students received a 100% reduction in the conference fee.

Three special thematic sessions dedicated to ESRF, XFEL, and SOLARIS were held, as well as a mini-session to which the winners of the Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society award were invited.

The session focused on ESRF was opened by Francesco Sette, long-time director of infrastructure, with a lecture in which he presented the history of the construction of the source, its modernization, and current research capabilities. Dr. Montserrat Soler Lopez presented biological research at ESRF. The session was concluded by Dr. Maciej Jankowski, who discussed challenges and solutions related to data analysis. Slides from the lectures can also be found on the conference website (https://issrns.pl/timetable).

Three equal prizes were awarded in the competition for the best poster. The winners were:

  • Tomasz Fok, Institute of Optoelectronics, Military University of Technology Near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) in the spectral range of 0.2–1.5 keV using a laser-plasma soft X-ray source
  • Karolina Rucińska, Faculty of Physics, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań The effect of copper oxide nanoparticles on human cystatin C – cell viability and in vivo flow studies
  • Sara Piotrowska, Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences Cathodoluminescence studies of gallium nitride nanowires coated with oxide layers.

Abstracts of all presentations can be found on the conference website (https://issrns.pl/) and in the latest bulletin of the Polish Synchrotron Radiation Society (https://biuletyn.synchrotron.org.pl/).
